Ajinomoto Launches “Birdy 3in1” Upcycling Project, Transforming Coffee Sachets into Furniture to Advance the Circular Economy
Ajinomoto Co., (Thailand) Ltd. reinforces its commitment to sustainability by advancing the “Birdy 3in1” Upcycling Project, which transforms used Birdy 3in1 coffee sachets, classified as Multi-Layer Plastic: MLP, from its production processes at the Ajinomoto Phra Pradaeng Factory (PPD) and the Latlumkaeo Packing Factory (LLK) into upcycled furniture for internal use. This initiative reflects the company’s commitment to resource efficiency while tangibly reducing waste released into the environment.

The upcycled furniture is produced from Birdy 3in1 coffee sachets, a type of Multi-Layer Plastic: MLP designed to preserve product quality and extend shelf life, but which presents challenges for conventional recycling processes. Ajinomoto has collected over 100,000 sachets and incorporated them into a structured waste management system. These materials are upcycled together with agricultural residues and recycled plastics through processes such as shredding, compression, and molding into durable composite boards. The resulting materials are then developed into a range of functional furniture, including the Sustainable Reception Set, Eco Outdoor Seating, and Circular Design Counter Table.

All operations are conducted in full compliance with regulations. Waste materials are transported for offsite treatment in accordance with legal requirements and with approval from the Department of Industrial Works. This reflects Ajinomoto’s commitment to transparent, responsible, and accountable waste management practices.
The “Birdy 3in1” Upcycling Project not only reduces the volume of hard to recycle plastic waste but also minimizes the use of virgin resources while advancing the principles of the circular economy by transforming waste into valuable resources that can be brought back into use.

It also supports the Group’s long-term target of reducing environmental impact by 50% by 2030.
Ajinomoto remains committed to driving sustainable business practices by reducing environmental impact while fostering a society that grows sustainably in all dimensions. The company believes that collaboration across all sectors is essential to building a balanced and sustainable future together.
