Ajinomoto Partners with PPP Plastics to Drive a Circular Economy for Plastic Waste Management in Thailand.

Recently, Ajinomoto Co., (Thailand) Ltd. reaffirmed its role as a model organization for sustainability by strengthening its commitment to concrete plastic waste management goals. Mr. Smith Phetdi, Sustainability Promotion Department Manager, represented the company in signing a joint declaration of intent with the PPP Plastics coalition—comprising government agencies, businesses, and civil society partners—to establish a Plastics Circularity Ecosystem that promotes sustainable plastic management under the principles of a circular economy. The event took place at the Phra Visanu Room, 3rd Floor, Asawin Grand Convention Hotel, Lak Si, Bangkok.

This declaration was part of the PPP Plastics Network Workshop under the theme “Collaboration for Advancing the Circular Economy Ecosystem in Waste and Plastic Waste Management in Thailand.” The workshop aimed to review progress on Thailand’s Plastic Waste Management Roadmap, with shared goals to reduce plastic waste, increase recycling rates, and generate added value from used materials to deliver economic benefits from the grassroots level upward. Key initiatives included the development of a National Plastics Circularity Ecosystem and the establishment of a database system to support Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The event was honored by the participation of the Pollution Control Department, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment; the National Metal and Materials Technology Center (MTEC), Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation; the Thailand Environment Institute (TEI); the Thailand Business Council for Sustainable Development (TBCSD); along with senior executives from more than 40 partner organizations. Together, they expressed their commitment to advancing practical solutions for plastic waste management.

The outcomes of this workshop will be compiled into a policy recommendation document to be submitted to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment for consideration in the development of Phase 3 of Thailand’s Plastic Waste Management Roadmap. The recommendations will also serve as a guideline for promoting circular economy practices in material reuse, as well as for shaping future national policies and regulations on sustainable waste management. This joint declaration underscores the collective determination to build an ecosystem that supports material circularity and sustainable waste management, while also enhancing Thailand’s competitiveness and long-term economic growth.
