Ajinomoto maximizes efficient resource management to reduce food waste across the entire value chain for its sustainable production
Ajinomoto Co., (Thailand) Ltd. realizes the importance of efficient management of food loss and waste which is now a serious global issue. The company is dedicated to addressing food loss and waste to promote food security and sustainable production throughout the value chain by developing cutting-edge technology and incorporating the 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) into all business operations throughout all factories and establishments. Ajinomoto is dedicating to achieving a long-term goal of reducing 50% of food loss and waste through the entire value chain by 2050 (compared to 2018). For the first phase, or a short-term target, the company has focused on accelerating management to reduce 50% of food loss and waste through the production chain and our business operations by 2025 (compared to 2018), which involves the raw material selection process, production, and packing design, as well as the proper disposal of waste without affecting the environment, in accordance with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals: SDGs
According to data from the United Nations Environment Program’s Food Waste Index Report, one-third of the world's food production, or about 1,300 million tons, is wasted every year, and the destruction of this food waste raises greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming by 8%. As a global leading food company, Ajinomoto strives to promote sustainability in production and consumption, reduce food loss and waste, and mitigate environmental impact by maximizing the efficient use of resources along the value chain through the concept “TOO GOOD, TOO WASTE”, which initiated by Ajinomoto Group. From 2018 to the last fiscal year, Ajinomoto Thailand has been able to reduce food loss and food waste by up to 43% (or 843 tons) versus the goal of 50% reduction by 2025 and is continuing to work on this issue until these days through various activities to maximize the efficient use of resources, such as excellent management of production without causing any waste, modern supply chain management using digital technology, waste reduction throughout entire product distribution activities, etc.
The Ajinomoto Group aims to become a "solution-providing group of companies for food and health issues" by working to reduce environmental impacts and regenerate the environment sustainably, with the 2030 goal to achieve 50% reduction in environmental impact. This reflects the conceptual framework for the Ajinomoto Group's work worldwide and the essence of Ajinomoto’s business operation, or so-called "The Ajinomoto Group Creating Shared Value (ASV)".
